What is the real motivation for being a feminist?

Some people say that feminists are just a bunch of women who have got serious hang-ups about men for whatever reason.
What do you think is the real motivation for being a feminist?
I think some feminists go there because of man-hatred, but it should not let everyone be put off, I consider myself a feminist but I love men and women equally, we are different, these differences should be embraced, but it is hard to do this without putting one gender down sometimes. Some men have female qualities and vice versa, we should be allowed to be ourselves without fear of gender reprisals or scabness, or slights on sexuality.
Some women become feminists in a reactionary way, fighting against a male oppression they have felt in their lives. This is fair enough. But it is negative to tar all men with the same brush, which I feel does happen a lot of the time. I have met quite a few mysogynistic men who tar all women with the same brush, accusing us of being 'slags' etc etc the list goes on.
When it comes to equality of rights, pay, etc, then hurrah feminism. When feminists put down stay at home mothers and suchlike, screw them. Freedom of opportunity is what it should all be about. Personally I would love to be a working mother with a stay at home man to look after the children. Unfortunately no one wants to make the babies with me so looks like I gonna be a career woman
